VERTICAL x HORIZONTAL Farm Tower
Location
London, UK
Date
2012
This project was undertaken as a design competition to push the boundaries of architectural innovation. At the time, we were exploring the potential of vertical farming, which was rapidly advancing in various parts of the world. Our concept was to create a vertical farm structure with cantilevered wing-like elements that would house an entire farming community, capable of rotating to follow the direction of sunlight.
Beneath each of these wings, a fleet of drones would operate, flying around the city to distribute farm produce to different parts of the community. Additionally, large wind turbine propellers would generate electricity for the entire building. The main structure of the building would feature organically growing plants, providing insulation against the heat, while all the window units would utilize photochromatic technology to adjust their translucency based on the brightness of the sunlight.
The Vertical and Horizontal Farm Tower was an endeavor to liberate ourselves from the constraints of financial, geopolitical, and structural limitations, envisioning a future where such a building could supply food and sustainable energy to the increasingly crowded urban landscape we inhabit.
