FAME x GREED Art Installation

Date

2013

Location

Hong Kong

This installation delves into the dialogue between fame and greed. In the human psyche, once fame and power are attained, greed often follows, revealing our shortcomings as money commands the power and politics of our world. Within the installation space, 10,000 plastic hands, collected from recycled mannequins, are positioned to rotate between upwards and downwards. The hands symbolize an uninterested audience when facing downwards, while rotating upwards, they mimic the gesture of begging for money, akin to beggars on the street.
Strategically placed sensors at the lower parts of the installation detect audience movement, causing the cluster of hands to turn upwards, creating the illusion of a crowd begging for money. This installation critiques how good intentions often falter towards greed, highlighting the difficulty of retaining principles and dignity when power and money intertwine with changes in the human psyche. The colour red is used throughout the installation as a warning, emphasizing the need to retain our humanity even when we gain fame and fortune.
