As requested by Shangri-La Hotel in Beijing, China, we aimed to recreate the rock garden, a historically significant landscape symbol in Chinese culture. In this project, we celebrate the digital world by overlaying hand-beaten chrome structures on top of LED screens, where digital information abstracted into zeros and ones is recreated as waterfalls flowing out of these two rocks. When the audience steps onto the LED platform, ripples appear, projected by digital information via pressure sensors.
Given the project's location in a traditional Chinese pagoda garden, we sought to create a highly technological installation that contrasts with the traditional elements, reminding the audience of the digitalization of reality as we move towards an era of augmented and virtual reality.
