PROJECT GASA Sustainable Covering for City of New York

Project Type

Photography

Date

April 2023

Date

2017

Location

New York, USA

This project is centered around the concept of allowing nature to become the architecture of our ideology. Commissioned by the New York City Council government, we were tasked with designing a shading system along the Hudson River coastline. We envision a structure created as a growth partition for plants to evolve naturally, utilizing recycled PVC pipes clustered randomly, inspired by the microscopic structure of skin texture.
Once completed, plants will be allowed to grow all over this covering, evolving through the four seasons as time and weather change. We are embracing the simplest and most minimalistic core of structural formation, letting nature determine the outcome of our design. Our dialogue with the audience emphasizes that sometimes architects over-design, whereas nature can perhaps do better. All we need to do is provide a leverage structure and let the rest be done by Mother Earth.
